002 Places
Almost 9 years ago, when we travelled to Sweden I discovered a Norwegian village named Lillehammer on the map. I only grabbed a quick snack for lunch in Nieuw-Vennep, haven’t seen a lot there. By chance Google Maps dropped me somewhere in the English countryside nearby Papworth Everard. At Copenhagen Central Station, according to the rhythm of the timetable a commuter train to Køge leaves perfectly on time. On a journey through Belgium a radio host informed her listeners about a traffic jam in Zelzate. When I lived in Berlin I really wanted to travel to Gorzow Wielkopolski, unfortunately I left Berlin before going there. The same goes for Eisenhüttenstadt, a place I must visit. Just like Poggibonsi, in the heart of beautiful Tuscany.
These places, the names of the places evoke the same magical fascination as New York, London or Paris to me. Places must worth traveling to I thought myself. I have to visit them someday.
I did! I explored the places of my fascinations and returned with abundant photographic material. The viewer can reconstruct the artistʼs expedition, create his own relations between the stations and be reminded of oneʼs own encounters through the familiar images of strange places. The corresponding texts depict sensitive portraits of the chosen places that emphasize their uniqueness. But the impression is deceiving: the texts emanate from the artistʼs imagination and have been written before his departure on his journey.
