008 1+1 can be 6 - School of the Future
Every year, a new group of children gets squeezed for about twenty years into a programme that calls itself the educational curriculum. Finally, they graduate and make their entrance into the world. A world for which they have been prepared by the education they just have completed. But have they really? Our society has changed at lightning speed over the past 25 years. However, education has not developed at the same pace. If we stick to the mathematical fact that 1 + 1 will always remain 2, then this gap will only increase even more. But 1+1 can also be 6. If we are willing to believe this, education can play a key role in the world of 2043.
The role of education in 2043 has been translated into a spatial conversation piece that presents a perspective on the future school. This school opened its doors, and went out and beyond! The schoolyard is no longer the fenced playground where students are anxiously kept inside. The schoolyard is no longer their world, the world has become the schoolyard. The school of the future consists largely of empty spaces. Empty spaces sound like pure waste of space, but offer the power and flexibility to be used by everyone in a different way. Our spatial concept stimulates own initiative, because we will need that badly by 2043. Moreover, our school is able to grow with the students and the world. The more the students grow, both physically and mentally, the smaller the distance between the safe learning environment and the real world becomes.
1 + 1 can be 6 was presented during the Education Festival organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and has been exhibited in the Education Museum.
